This course will introduce students to pharmaceutical economics and policy. The lectures and seminars will give students an understanding of the basic features of pharmaceutical markets, how pharmaceutical markets work, and how competition manifests itself in different parts of pharmaceutical markets. The course will also explore why the pharmaceutical sector is heavily regulated, the rationale behind drug pricing measures, and the impact of patents on access to medicines, among many other issues. These topics will be explored from the perspectives of key stakeholders, including governments, third-party payers, drug companies, clinicians, patients, pharmacists, and wholesalers.
