Convenor: Dr. Yael Gordon
Hi, My name is Dr. Yael Gordon and I will be teaching the course "Media Representation in the Age of Globalization," - MC416. This half-unit course delves into the critical role media plays in shaping public perceptions, particularly focusing on how "Others" are portrayed across various media platforms.
In today's society, we're increasingly reliant on media—whether it's news, social media, television, films, or advertisements. These platforms aren't just sources of information; they're powerful tools that influence how we see the world, how we perceive others, and how we understand ourselves. We'll pay special attention to the portrayal of refugees, a group often marginalized in media narratives.
We'll explore key issues such as the visibility and voice of refugees in media, the ethical challenges in representing suffering, and how gender plays a role in these portrayals. We'll also look at how refugees represent themselves on social media and the ways humor can mediate depictions of "the Other."
Throughout the course, you'll engage with theoretical analysis and case studies, deepening your understanding of the complex dynamics involved in media representation. By the end, you'll have developed the critical tools to analyze and challenge the narratives that shape public perceptions, particularly those concerning marginalized groups.
Our course structure includes a weekly lecture and a seminar where we'll integrate theory with practical examples. For assessment, you'll write a 3,000-word essay that will account for 100% of your grade. This course is an opportunity to critically engage with media's role in shaping society and to challenge the representations that often go unquestioned. I look forward to exploring these important topics with you.
