About the course

This course aims to provide a grounding in key debates in urban studies and policy with reference to the Global South. It highlights the interconnections between evolving urban ideas and research and policy. Topics include the relationship between cities, development, and urban knowledge; the varying role of the state in transforming urban space; gentrification; the rise of global cities; the transforming geography of global urban theory; colonialism, post-colonialism, Indigeneity, and Blackness in the city; experiments in urban inclusion; queering cities; urban infrastructural development; migration and everyday urban life; and urban violence. Dedicated lectures will draw from staff research and relevant urban/developmental research literature, especially Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, but also broaching a number of sites in the 'Global North' to understand both continuities and contrasts.
