This course is designed to give students an understanding of:

  • the foreign policy of the European Union or, more precisely the European Union’s ‘foreign policy system’, which includes the external economic relations of the European Community, the Common Foreign and Security Policy, the European Security and Defence Policy, as well as the main contributions of individual national foreign policies to the EU foreign policy;

  • the main aspects of relations between, on the one hand, the EU and, on the other, its key partners and main interest areas, including in particular the United States, Russia, the Balkans and the Middle East;

  • the main analytical concepts used in the literature to understand and explain developments in the foreign policy of the European Union.
