The course aims to:
- Examine patterns of homicide in different contemporary societies and the explanations for these differing patterns
- Explore the differences between crime fiction and the ‘realities’ of homicide, both in terms of type/incidence, and investigative practices
- Examines the sociological significance of homicide, including the importance of structural factors, and gender, race, and sexuality, in patterns of victimisation
- Explore investigative processes, the experiences of victims’ families and the significance of murder in contemporary society
